This is the true OE style 65K model. We have tested our HEI distributor up to 7000 rpm on an SBC 350 engine with 13:1 compression ratio, and made 535 hp on the dyno.

Be sure you have sufficient firewall clearance before purchasing. This unit is one full inch wider in diameter, and approximately one and a half inches taller compared to a point style distributor. The HEI cap is 5.25" in diameter and 5.00" tall. If your car came equipped (1975 & up) with an HEI unit, then you should not have a problem. The firewall tunnel on many GM vehicles (pre-1975) with point style distributors will allow space for the full size HEI unit, but there are some that do not have enough clearance.

The quality of this unit far exceeds any of the others on the market. We have much less tolerance for failure than many other sellers seem to have. Other sellers claim to have the best, and we know that to not to be true in many cases. If you think the 6501 unit with the OE style cap is still not small enough, then you may need the small base ready to run HEI unit. It has a base and cap the size of an original point distributor, but requires an external coil. These are called "Ready to Run" or "Small Base HEI Distributors." The part number is 6701 for Chevy engines. See our other listings for a full variety of distributors.

This distributor uses one wire to power it up. Be sure to have 12+ volts going to this unit. If you are installing it in an early model car that had a points distributor in it, you may have to run a dedicated wire to the distributor. Point type distributors ran on a reduced amount of voltage, and the wires going to them will have an in-line ballast resistor in them, or possibly a firewall resister. You must by-pass this.

You may run a flat tappet cam cam gear or a hyd. roller cam gear with this distributor. Cams that are aftermarket solid roller billet steel type may have a billet steel gear on them, and the gear will have to be changed to a bronze gear. Some billet steel cams have a regular cast steel gear pressed on them and some don't. Check with the company that made the cam if your not sure.

The mechanical advance span on these distributors is approximately 20 degrees. In other words, if you set your total timing at around 32 degrees, the initial timing, (at idle) without the vac. advance hooked up will fall back to around 12 degrees. These distributors have medium to stiff springs in them, and don't fully total out until around 4500 rpm. We would think that after the springs have been used for a short time they will total out sooner than 4500 rpm. You can easily change out the springs to a set of milder set if you like, and some of the curve kits also come with different weights. This distributor also has an adjustable vacuum advance, and this will allow you to control just how much advance it adds to your initial timing when it's hooked up. The effects of this can also vary depending on what source you hook it up to. Some prefer direct manifold vacuum, and some prefer hooking it up to the carburetor. Some carbs have multiple ports to choose from.

You will notice a performance difference in your engine if you have any of the above issues with your old distributor. All of the old HEI's we see have excess end play in the shaft. I'm sure the coils on them are not at full voltage. This is much more than the OEM model. All car makers have dramatically improved the ignition systems over the years on cars and trucks. This is an indication of how important it is to have a proper ignition system.

The part numbers for distributors beginning with 65 and 85 are interchangeable. The distributors are identical in every respect. We changed the artwork on the package to private labeling and our supplier had to change our part number to distinguish our private label (85 series) from the standard labeling sold to other suppliers (65 series). You may receive the alternate part number since we still have both in stock.


Very Important Note.

Our technical knowledge is limited on this product. Our sales staff are usually unable to answer many of the questions asked. Many of the questions are, "how do you install this distributor", "what model cars will this work in", "how do I wire it up" Most of the people on our sales staff simply don't know these answers, and even if we did, the time involved answering so many of these questions is what led us to writing this notice. We update info in our listings on a regular basis, and if it's not in the ad, then there's a good chance we don't know the info. Well, it is, and with that being said, a video is worth a million words. If you go to YouTube and type in key words such as, "How to install a pro billet distributor" you will find dozens of highly informative videos showing the complete process step by step. These videos are usually very accurate. We suggest that you watch several of them because some are easier to understand than others, and some have additional info in them that may not be covered in the others. You can't possibly go wrong watching these videos. At one time, we put installation instructions in our ads, and they led to much confusion for many, and the emails and calls coming were numerous. The videos on YouTube will be all you need. They are very simple and straightforward to follow. We did a search on the key words mentioned above, and literally hundreds of "how to" videos on every aspect of installing a pro billet came up.
